French retailer Carrefour Supermarket has announced it will open its fourth outlet in Kenya at the Junction Mall, replacing Nakumatt as the anchor tenant which was kicked out over failure to pay rent arrears amounting to more than Sh 50 Million.
The new hypermarket will be opened in January 2018 and will initially operate a section of the total selling partial area, offering a selected product range, while major refurbishment work is progressed in the eventual 5,000 square metre selling area. It will serve those living in the numerous residential areas along Ngong Road, as well as residents in Lavington and the greater Kilimani Area.
Carrefour entered the local market in May last year when it began operations at the Hub shopping mall in the Karen suburb, Nairobi. In March this year, the chain opened its second store at the Two Rivers Mall. And just last month, it opened its third outlet at Thika Road Mall (TRM), a space previously occupied by Nakumatt.
The 12 year old Junction Mall is situated at the junction of Ngong Road, Naivasha Road and King’ara Road and is one of the largest malls in Nairobi. The complex offers 256,000 square feet of floor space hosting over 120 stores both local and international brands. The mall is majority owned by the wealthy Ndegwa family.
