Zimbabwe Approves Starlink Operations after Months of Regulatory Deadlock

Zimbabwe Approves Starlink Operations after Months of Regulatory Deadlock

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has approved satellite internet services offered by Starlink after SpaceX agreed to partner with a public network firm in the country called IMC Communications.

    • •Last month, POTRAZ ordered Starlink to disconnect its internet service in the country unless it sought regulatory approval.
    • •Moreover, the authority mentioned that users who had smuggled in kits from neighbouring countries and using roaming services to access the network were liable for prosecution.
    • •IMC Communications will henceforth be the sole distributor of Starlink products in the country and customers can now enjoy a mobile subscription plan which is cheaper than roaming.

“I’m pleased to announce that I have approved the licensing of Starlink by POTRAZ to provide advanced internet and related digital processing services in Zimbabwe through its sole and exclusive local partner, IMC Communications (Pvt) Ltd.,” said Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa on X (formerly Twitter).

Mnangagwa said the decision was occasioned by the country’s commitment to prioritize digital innovation and technological advances that would transform the country’s battered fortunes. Many Zimbabwean citizens have welcomed the approval, citing that Starlink is a revolution to the country’s internet infrastructure that remains poor and inaccessible.

However, some users have pledged to continue buying their Starlink kits from neighbouring countries such as Zambia and Mozambique. The sole dealership secured by IMC Communications raises the concern about affordability as the lack of competition could drive prices up.

Starlink recently doubled monthly subscription prices in Kenya a week ago. The monthly service price rose from Ksh. 7,900 to Ksh. 14,000. Last month, the satellite internet service slashed its kit prices by 55.6% to lure more buyers.

The costly nature of Starlink has stunted its growth in markets such as Kenya where viable and cheaper alternatives exist. However, in countries where local data networks cannot be relied upon, Starlink is set to gain a strong footing.
