    World Resources Institute Appoints Wanjira Mathai as Regional Director for Africa

    World Resources Institute (WRI) has appointed Wanjira Maathai as the Regional Director for Africa, and Vice President.

    Ms Wanjira, who holds master’s degrees in Business and Public Health from Emory University, is thus tasked with the design and implementation of the organization’s Africa strategy in general.

    Although she will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, Ms Wanjira will also lead the organization’s works from its hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

    Prior to this appointment, Ms Wanjira served on WRI’s Global Board, and as a Senior Advisor for WRI’s Global Restoration Initiative since 2018.

    Ms Wanjira also served as the Executive Chair of the Wangari Maathai Foundation, which works to advance the legacy and vision of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Wangari Maathai.

    Additionally, she also also led the wPower (Partnership for Women’s Entrepreneurship on Renewables) Project at the Wangari Maathai Institute and served as the Executive Director of the Green Belt Movement International.

    The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global research non-profit organization. Its headquarters are in Washington D.C., United States.

    The organization’s mission is to promote environmental sustainability, economic opportunity, and human health and well-being. WRI partners with local and national governments, private companies, publicly held corporations, and other non-profits, and offers services including global climate change issues, sustainable markets, ecosystem protection, and environmental responsible governance services.

    WRI works on projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Ghana and Liberia.
