The cost of water and sewer services in some counties is expected to go up beginning August this year following an approval by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).
In a message to consumers, the Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) notified consumers to brace for higher prices beginning August. Elsewhere, WASREB has given the Tana River Water and Sewerage Company (TAWASCO) an approval to adjust upwards its tariffs.
The Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company review on water and sewer tariffs which takes effect this month is based on the implementation of the approved tarrif indexation published via a gazette notice on 21 July by the Water Services Regulatory Board.
The Tana River Water and Sewerage Company (TAWASCO) applied to the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) for a review of tariffs for water services, for the period 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 as per section 72 (1) (b) of the Water Act, 2016.
Public consultation on the application was carried out in accordance with the requirements of section 139 of the Water Act, 2016.
“After considering the application, the written and oral submissions by all stakeholders during the consultation period, and based on latest available data, WASREB has determined an upward tariff review for TAWASCO is justified to improve service delivery, operate sustainably and protect consumer interests by meeting the tariff conditions attached to the tariff,” said Julius Itunga, acting Chief Executive Officer, Wasreb.
WASREB has given a one month notice to all existing and potential customers of TAWASCO of the new approved tariffs for the three financial years, 2023/2024, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026.
