Vodacom Tanzania Confirms Sylvia Mulinge Denied Work Permit

Vodacom Tanzania has confirmed that former Safaricom Director of Consumer Business Sylvia Mulinge has been denied a work permit by the country’s immigration officials.

In a statement, the telco said it will start the process of identifying a suitable replacement who “will not only inspire confidence in investors but also have the requisite governance capability as a CEO of a listed company.”

Sylvia Mulinge’s appointment as CEO of Vodacom Tanzania hit the wall on grounds that there are more experienced Tanzanians to take on the task. Ms Mulinge should have started her new job in June after taking over from Ian Ferrao. The telco has in the meantime appointed Hishim Hendi to the position in an acting capacity.

    Sylvia’s New Role at Safaricom

Last Week, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore announced the re-appointment of Ms Sylvia to the company as Director of Special Projects, effective October 1st.

“In this new role, she will report directly to me, and will be responsible for spearheading our commercial revival and help us deliver our strategy and transform Safaricom into a business that is fit for the future.” read the memo from Bob Collymore to the staff.
