Vodacom Cuts Data Prices by Up to 40%

South Africa’s Vodacom has cut data prices by up to 40%, while at the same time launching the ConnectU, a zero-rated platform that enables users to access essential services for free, with effect from 1st April 2020.

The ConnectU gives free access to job portals, free educational content on the e-School platform, free health, and wellness information.

“Today’s price cuts and free access to ConnectU will also assist South Africans during the national state of disaster while at the same time helping to drive greater digital inclusion,” says Jorge Mendes, Chief Officer of Vodacom’s Consumer Business Unit.

Africa Business Communities reports that the slash in data prices follows a two-year investigation by South Africa’s Competition Commission, which found out that the cost of mobile data was too high for SA consumers. It, therefore, asked MTN and Vodacom to cut their data prices by 30%-50% or face prosecution.

Business Live reports that Vodacom is expected to lose up to $145 million over the next year due to the data-price cuts.
