    Visitors Arrivals in Key Airports Fell in September-KNBS

    The total number of visitor arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Moi International Airport (MIA) fell from 175,113 in August 2024 to 144,996 in September 2024, the latest Leading Economic Indicators by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report shows.

    • •The Moi International Airport recorded a 22.5 per cent drop, decreasing from 19,822 to 15,371, while JKIA reported a 16.5 per cent decline, falling from 155,291 to 129,625 during the same period.
    • •The number of embarked passengers by port of destination rose from 259,304 in May 2024 to 283,104 in June 2024. Similarly, the number of passengers who landed by port of origin increased from 257,876 to 296,807 during the same period.
    • •East and Central Africa contributed to the bulk of landed passengers by port of origin at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) followed by Europe and Far East in the month of June.

    According to Leading Economic Indicators report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), North Africa and North America contributed to the least landed passengers by ort of Origin in June at 8, 44p and 8,029 respectively.

    The total landed passengers from East and Central Africa accounted for 81,576 followed Europe’s 60, 459 while far East accounted for 21,580 landed passengers at Kenya’s biggest airport in June.

    West Africa’s total landed passengers in June was 12,501 the second highest in the year compared to May’s 12,615 from the same region. Abidjan, Doula, Lagos and Accra accounted for 1,553, 732, 4,558, 5,098 landed passengers in the same month.

    From Europe, more landings were traced from Amsterdam (16,074), London (14,840), Paris (14,337), Zurich (6,039) and Brussels (5,326). JKIA witnessed the highest landing passengers from Europe in January and least in April with KNBS putting the figures at 61,569 and 43,248 respectively.

    The Monthly Leading Economic Indicators report highlights changes in Consumer Price Indices, inflation rates, interest rates and exchange rates. In addition, the report details changes in selected indicators of international trade, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, construction, tourism and transport.

    According to the stats the total number of newly registered motor vehicles and motorcycles, categorized by body type, fell from 13,499 units in July 2024 to 9,888 units in August 2024. The number of newly registered motorcycles dropped from 6,060 units to 4,292 units during the same period.

    Railways

    The volume of cargo transported via the SGR decreased from 582.4 thousand tonnes to 512.5 thousand tonnes, in contrast, revenue from cargo transport slightly increased to KSh 1.2 billion during the same period

    Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) passenger usage declined from 240,026 persons in August 2024 to 231,684 persons in September 2024. Revenue from MGR passenger traffic decreased from KSh 13.7 million to KSh 12.4 million during the same period.

    The total volume of cargo handled decreased from 3.5 million MT in August 2024 to 3.4 million MT in September 2024. Export volume fell from 410.8 thousand MT to 410.0 thousand MT, while import volume declined from 2.7 million MT to 2.5 million MT.

    In contrast, transshipment volume grew from 380.2 thousand MT to 493.6 thousand MT, and restows increased from 8.8 thousand MT to 14.4 thousand MT, during the same period.
