On the sidelines of the inaugural #CeloConnect conference in Barcelona, our team in partnership with BitKe interviewed Rene Reinsberg, the Founder and President of CELO Foundation.
In this interview, Rene Reinsberg talks about Celo’s mission to build a better and regenerative finance system focusing on the power of blockchain and web3 to address climate change thereby creating a more equitable and sustainable financial system.
“Already today, Celo currencies/products are already used in almost every country in the world with some of the strongest adoption in places like Brazil where in December through a governance proposal the Celo Real (cREAL) was proposed and introduced earlier this year. Its phenomenal because you can today walk into every other store in Brazil and take out your Celo Wallet and pay with Celo real with the local point of sale.”
Rene Reinsberg.
“I am personally most excited about this move towards a regenerative financial system at the heart of which are bringing more natural assets on chain and that existing as a building block for applications that I can’t think about right now…” Rene Reinsberg.

What is Celo?
Celo is a blockchain ecosystem focused on increasing cryptocurrency adoption among smartphone users. By using phone numbers as public keys, Celo hopes to introduce the world’s billions of smartphone owners, including those without banking access, to transacting in cryptocurrency.
The network also allows for the creation of smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) targeting sectors such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The platform has two native tokens. CELO is a proof-of-stake (PoS) token used for transaction fees, governance participation and related activities. In future, the platform aims to host various stablecoins, with three, the Celo Dollar (CUSD), the Celo Euro (CEUR) and the Celo Brazilian Real (CREAL) already in use.
