Unilever Tea Kenya Plc has announced its intention to apply for a Licence to generate, transmit and distribute electricity for use within its estates in Western Kenya that include Kericho and Bomet Counties.
According to the Notice, the Kericho-based tea multinational will make the application for a licence on 8th February 2022.
Unilever to upgrade Kimugu and Jamji power stations
The power will be generated, transmitted and distributed from existing stations to be upgraded at Kimugu and Jamji Power Stations located in Kericho town respectively to serve the company’s installations around the said estates.
The agro-based business firm invites any interested parties wishing to inspect the application to visit its offices along Kericho-Nakuru Road near Brooke Market in Kericho County.
Any objections should be addressed to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority before expiry of 30 days from the date the license application is made and a copy sent to Unilever Kenya Kenya Plc.
In January 2009 the tea grower and processor delisted from the Nairobi Stock exchange after Brooke Bond took its holding in the company to 97.65 percent.
The drive to de-list from the NSE emanated from the fact that it does not meet the requirement that all listed firm should have at least 25% equity stake owned by local shareholders.
The tea conglomerate has a worldwide turnover worth 40.5 billion sterling pounds and employs 174 000 people in around 100 countries worldwide.
The multinational achieves close to half of its turnover in developing and emerging markets in Asia, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe and Latin America.
