The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) will implement a European Union (EU) funded €3.7 million (Ksh 425 million) Market Access Upgrade Program (MARKUP).
The program seeks to enhance market access and competitiveness of Kenya’s agricultural exports regionally and internationally.
In addition, MARKUP will ensure that animal and plant-based products adopt relevant international quality standards and food safety regulations.
Currently, the share of Kenyan agricultural products is shrinking. This is as a result of high levels of pesticide residues beyond legal limits, poor hygiene and harmful organisms.
Therefore, MARKUP intends to train small scale farmers from 12 Kenyan counties along selected value chains. These include green beans, snow peas, chillies, mango, passion fruits, groundnuts, herbs and spices.
Furthermore, UNIDO will enhance competitiveness in terms of price, quality, and innovation through adopting and adapting technologies and accessing markets.
The project will be implemented by UNIDO in partnership with the International Trade Centre and the German Technical Cooperation. At the regional level, it partners withthe East African Community (EAC).
MARKUP is a 4-year programme that seeks to facilitate the enhancement of market access of EAC partner states products to the EU and enhance inter EAC regional trade.
