UNCONFIRMED: Brookside in Talks to Acquire Githunguri's Fresha

Brookside Dairy, producers of Ilara, Tuzo and Delamare brands of milk, have approached Githunguri Dairy Farmers Cooperative to acquire its Fresha product line.

Brookside is associated with President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose family owns majority of the dairy firm that processes and markets fresh milk, yoghurt and butter in East Africa. It made a gross revenues of $176 million in 2014.

Introduced in 1993, Brookside is also partly owned by France-based Danone and Dubai-based private equity firm Abraaj Capital.

In 2013, the milk processor said it was looking to acquire 20 per cent stake in Ethiopia’s Elemtu Milk Integrated Industry, which was then erecting a Ksh277.82 million dairy factory in Sululta, 25km north of Addis Ababa.

It has a market share of 40 per cent, followed by New KCC (35 per cent) and Githunguri at 10 per cent.

Githunguri Dairy Farmers joined the market in 1961, and set its first processing plant in 2004 with its flagship Fresha product. It has since expanded its market to South Sudan and Tanzania. In 2013, it grossed $60 million in annual turnover.
