According to the co-founder of aLL Design Marcos Rosello, the architecture company in partnership with Kiloran Development Group will construct the largest mall at the fringe of Nairobi’s central business district.
Kiloran developed the Sh1.3 billion Cedar Mall in Nanyuki, which received Sh820 million in construction funds from Housing Finance. The construction of the mixed-use development, called the Beacon, will be completed in 2020.
aLL Design revealed that the mall will occupy a space of 28,500 square metres somewhere off Uhuru Highway and near the Bunyala roundabout. This will make the development the first of its size to be located at the fringe of the CBD.
“We were intrigued by Kiloran’s ideas for this mall in Nairobi and were pleased to be able [to] create an open-air mall with a focus on sustainability, fun and family which we believe to be key drivers on future international mall design,” Rosello said.
The Upcoming Beacon
According to the developers, the location of The Beacon is perfect because it sits in close proximity to the CBD, Upper Hill, and Industrial Area.
The mall will offer retail spaces, leisure activities, and Grade A offices. The retail, beverage, and food spaces will occupy 24,300 square metres while the seven-story office tower will occupy 4,200 square metres.
The project will be the first aLL Design gig in Africa and the second for Nairobi and London-based Kiloran Development Group. According to aLL Design, the architectural design of the mall will be one of a kind and it will play a part in boosting tourism in the country.
aLL Design was co-founded by renown British architect Will Alsop who left a legacy of popular developments such as the Peckham Library and the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre.
