Struggling retailer, Uchumi Supermarkets has announced it will by the end of this month shut down its two branches in Nairobi citing unprofitability.
The retailer says it will not be renewing its lease at Capital Centre Mall and Jipange branch along Thika Road Uchumi after reaching an “amicable decision with some of its landlords.”
Uchumi’s Chief Operating Officer Mr. Andrew Dixon claims the “move is consumer and market informed decision that aims to restore Uchumi back to profitability.” He added that Uchumi has identified new sites and are pursuing possible partnerships with the landlords.
In a joint statement, the Capital Centre management said, “Uchumi has been our partner and we have enjoyed a cordial relationship spanning over 20 years. We are planning some refurbishments within the centre, which would impact Uchumi.”
