Uber has launched a boat service to ease Lagos’ traffic connecting the capital’s 22 million through the lagoon. Uber will operate the new waterway service in partnership with Lagos State Water Authority and local boat operators.
The new service targets to cut productive hours lost during a commute, and provide an affordable way to connect destinations. The company will charge $ 1.30 per trip, conducting four trips during the day. However, users will have to book 24 hours before the travel time secure space on the 35 people boats.
“We are aware of the lost man hours and productivity due to vehicular traffic in Lagos state. Therefore, we are looking at ways to provide commuters with an easy and affordable way to get in and out of the city’s business districts.” Uber West Africa General Manager revealed.
The commute in Lagos is not mean feat. CNN posits that Lagos residents spend up to 30 hours a week in traffic. Moreover, the rapidly increasing population calls for better road facilities and a high capacity transit system. Uberboat will compliment other means of transport in the city, allowing Lagos to ease decongestion.
