Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), along with Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities, has signed an agreement with Egypt’s New and Renewable Energy Authority to build a 10-gigawatt onshore wind farm in Egypt. The project, valued at over US$10 billion, aims to be one of the largest wind farms globally.
The wind farm is expected to produce 47,790 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually, reducing approximately 9% of Egypt’s carbon emissions by displacing 23.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. It will also help Egypt reach its target of sourcing 42% of its energy from renewables by 2030 and save an estimated US$5 billion in natural gas costs annually.
The original agreement for the wind farm was signed between Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities, Infinity Power, and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company during the UN climate change conference, COP27, in 2022. The project is part of Masdar’s commitment to supporting African nations in achieving their renewable energy objectives.
Masdar has also signed deals to develop renewable energy projects in Angola, Uganda, and Zambia.
Lake Turkana Wind Power Project in Kenya had been the largest wind farm in Africa and covers 160 square kilometres and has a capacity of 310 MW. It comprises 365 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 kilowatts.
