The Transport Licensing Appeals Board has issued a series of compliance directives to Super Metro Limited following safety violations, reinstating a suspension of its operations pending compliance.
- •In a ruling delivered on Monday, the Board ordered the matatu operator to immediately present a total of 39 vehicles — eight for speed limiter violations and 31 for broader compliance issues — to the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Center.
- •Additionally, 42 drivers flagged for overspeeding will have to undergo retesting at the Likoni Driver Test Centre.
- •The tribunal further directed Supermetro to disengage 269 drivers listed in NTSA’s affidavit and submit documentation of road safety training sessions conducted for its drivers.
NTSA’s March 18 directive suspending the company’s operations has also been reinstated, with the tribunal ordering a halt to operations until compliance is confirmed.
SuperMetro stated that it would suspend services for three days to finalize outstanding compliance measures, in line with the TLAB’s directives.
“We are working diligently to address the outstanding compliance issues within the stipulated time frame and will resume operations as soon as we receive approval from the relevant authorities,” the company said.
Supermetro, one of Nairobi’s leading commuter transport providers, has faced increasing scrutiny amid growing concerns over passenger safety and regulatory compliance. The company had been praised for many years for upholding discipline in the matatu industry but the reputation was blotted after a tout killed a passenger earlier this year.
A follow-up session is scheduled for April 17 to verify compliance and issue further directions.
