Track laying of Nairobi-Naivasha SGR Phase 2A kicks off

The laying of railway track of Nairobi – Naivasha SGR Phase 2A has begun and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months according to China Communications Construction Company, contractors of the project.

Steve Zhao, the CCCC spokesperson said that the erection of the T-beams and subsequent laying of the rail sleepers would be done from both ends of the line from Naivasha towards Nairobi.

He said 389 spans of T-beams have been pre-fabricated, with each span made of two symmetrical sections and 80,000 rail sleepers to cover 39kms. Mr Zhao further added that construction of the railway stations is already underway at Ongata Rongai, Ngong and Suswa.

“We are also on course to complete the 4.5km Ngong tunnel in August, the first and longest railway tunnel in the country,” he said.

The phase to Naivasha will cost Sh150 billion, which will be financed using a loan from the EXIM Bank of China.

Kenya Railways Chairman Michael Waweru says they will work closely with the National Land Commission (NLC) to ensure that payments are effected expeditiously so that persons affected by the project can relocate and pave way for construction works to continue.
