The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission has issued an urgent regional alert following a significant safety recall of Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 models.
- •The watchdog’s intervention follows a high-priority notification from South Africa regarding 1,846 vehicles sold between January 8, 2025, and January 16, 2026.
- •The recall centers on a programming error within the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU) of the SUV’s 10-speed automatic system.
- •According to technical reports, a failure in the linear solenoids may go undetected by the vehicle’s diagnostic software, potentially leading to the transmission over-revving and sustaining internal damage.
This mechanical strain can result in a sudden loss of motive power at high speeds or, in more severe cases, cause transmission fluid to leak from the housing. National Consumer Commission (NCC) officials warned that "this could increase the risk of a crash or fire if an ignition source is present".
Because the Land Cruiser 300 series is widely imported across various member states, the Commission is advising all owners in the Common Market to exercise extreme caution.
Steven Kamukama, Director of Consumer Welfare and Advocacy, noted that the Commission "warns the general public in the Common Market of the dangers related to the Recalled Vehicles" and urged drivers to verify their vehicle’s status immediately.
