The Angaza Awards Women to Watch in Banking & Finance program will on 8 June celebrate the 2022 list of Top 10 women who are steering and shaping Africa’s financial services sector. Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first democratically elected female president and 2011 Nobel Prize Winner, is among the leaders celebrating the Awardees through the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development. H.E. Sirleaf has worked through the Presidential Center to equip women leaders including young women in the civil service as part of the Amujae Initiative.
The Angaza Awards event is sponsored by Old Mutual (www.oldmutual.com), Remitly (www.remitly.com), and Equity Group Holdings (https://equitygroupholdings.com). The featured speakers include Her Excellency Ambassador Fatima Kyari Mohammed, African Union Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Ophelia Inez Weeks, Executive Director and Board Secretary, EJS Presidential Center for Women and Development, and veteran journalist Zulfiani (Uni) Lubis. The 2022 Awards follows last year’s program which featured Dr Nancy Onyango of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and New York Times Best-Selling Author Gail Evans as keynote speakers and was sponsored by Equity Bank Group and Old Mutual Ltd.

We firmly believe that the inclusion of women in the economy empowers others, helps society to grow stronger and leads to greater success and economic growth. We’re proud to have a growing number of women in top leadership positions at Old Mutual, including five dynamic female leaders on our Exco, making us one of Africa’s most gender-transformed financial services companies

The 2022 Angaza Awards list was compiled following a three-month entry period which saw dozens of professionals from Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe submit applications. The Angaza Awards criteria included an assessment of the applicants’ area of responsibility and contribution to firm performance. Scores were also awarded for achievements that transcended the institution and resulted in shared value creation in the society and through environmental responsibility. The awardees are multifaceted professionals representing banking, investment banking, insurance, fintech, insurtech, cross-border payments, and development finance.
As a leading global provider of financial services for immigrants and their families, we commend those that are having a positive and profound impact on diversifying the financial services industry and to make it more inclusive. It’s an honor to participate in and support the Angaza Awards, and look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of these outstanding recipients.

Angaza Awards is building a very credible pipeline of credible role models, women leaders in banking and finance who are values driven and have chosen to innovatively turn the challenges we face into opportunities. I have been challenged by the Angaza Awards to do more; we have revamped the Equity Equip program for women in the bank. We also recently had a wonderful celebration for International Women’s Day and kicked off a book club
