Tea farmers from the Kisii Region are demanding for the reduction of officials at the Kenya Tea Development Agency. They blame the many officials for the low bonus payouts.
The low tea bonus payouts angered farmers across the country.
Kisii tea farmers threatened to uproot tea bushes after they were paid Ksh 11 per kilo. Thus they wanted the KTDA officials reduced so as to get reasonable earnings.
The farmers also demanded that KTDA be handed back to the government as they complained that brokers have infiltrated the whole tea value chain.
KTDA in defense stated that the low income was attributed to a market glut in the international market and poor quality tea.
