The Mombasa Weekly Tea Auction recorded a slight dip in prices, with prices per kilo falling from $1.97 in the tea auction held on 11th, 12th, and 13th January 2021 to $1.96 in the auction held on the 18, 19 and 20th. Year of Year prices fell by almost half from $2.19 at a similar period in 2020 to $1.96 in the latest auction.
The amount on offer for sale fell from 11.2 million kilograms in the second auction, held on 11th, 12th, and 13th January 2021 to 10.3 million kilos in the recent auction. Year on Year tea of offer fell from 11.4 million kilos.
Of all the tea on offer, only 9.09 million kilograms were sold in this week’s auction compared to 10.2 million kilograms in the last week.
This week, the Ministry of Agriculture gave KTDA and multinational players in the tea Sector a two-month window to close direct sea sales in line with the Tea Act. The Tea Act requires players to sell all tea exclusively through the Tea Auction.
