The weekly Mombasa Tea Auction held on the 4th and 5th May 2020 recorded 12.2 million kilograms of tea offered for sale. The amount of tea on offer slightly decreased from 12.3 million kilograms offered for sale in the previous sale held on 27th and 28th April 2020.
Of all the tea offered for sale, 11 million kilograms were sold compared to 9.3 million kilograms sold in the same period last year.
Furthermore, the sale also recorded a decline in prices, with a kilogram selling at an average of $1.95, compared to $2.08 in the previous sale, and $2.22 for the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Tea Sector Lobby Group is pushing for reforms in the sector, a move that seeks to improve tea farmers’ earnings and uphold international standards in the tea factories in Kenya.
Kenya is the world’s largest black tea exporter. The Standard reports that in 2019, the tea sector earned the country KSh117 billion from exports, and KSh22 billion in local sales.
