The weekly Mombasa Tea Auction held on 28th, 29th, and 30th March 2022 had 13.4 million kilograms of tea offered for sale. The amount on offer increased from 13.1 million kilograms during the previous sale, and 12.6 million kilograms during a similar period last year.
Of all the tea offered for sale, 11.8 million kilograms were sold, similar to the previous sale, compared to 11.1 million kilograms sold during the same period last year.
The tea auction recorded a slight decrease in prices, with a kilogram selling at an average price of $2.36, compared to $2.39 during the previous sale held on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd March 2022, and $1.82 during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, tea farmers are set to earn more following the automation of trading at the Mombasa auction amid concerns of price manipulation at the facility that determines growers’ bonuses.
Currently, buyers and brokers meet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Mombasa, where the auctioneer expertly coaxes potential buyers seated around a room to clinch deals.
The KSh243 million automation, which started in 2016, will end the practice of verbal bids in efforts to increase transparency. It is a deal between Eatta and Trade Mark East Africa.
