The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has summoned political activist Morara Kebaso after saying he failed to file tax returns on KSh 186 million earned in sales from his businesses.
- The companies he owns include : Igrow Digital Enterprise, Backtent Security Ltd., Morara Properties Ltd. (Blacksmith Morara Ltd.), Morara Home Furniture, and Luku Fashion.
- The taxman also alleged that Morara owned three bank accounts, two of which are tied to two businesses, indicating that he was receiving earnings for the last three years.
- According to the Nation, Morara owes the authority about KSh 27 million in taxes; which include KSh 25.7 million in Value Added Tax (VAT) and KSh 1.37 million in Income Tax.
“You are hereby requested to avail for examination copies of the entities’ records, books of accounts, and any other document,” KRA said.
The taxman accused Morara of not declaring income turnover or registering for VAT despite having bank deposits above the KSh 5 million threshold, such as Morara Home Furniture which received over KSh 146 million.
“The trade credits were compared with income tax turnover declared in the income tax returns, to which it was noted that you are a non-filer, to determine undeclared income turnover,” KRA noted.
In a series of posts on X, Morara said he does not own iGrow Digital Enterprise. “It is a youth group that we registered as schoolmates in 2014 when we were in the university.” the activist said on Thursday, “The business never started because we did not get the capital to start.”
“This is a clear attempt to push me to my knees so that i agree to collaborate with corrupt leaders in the mismanagement of our country,” he added.
Morara was shoved into the spotlight of Kenya’s politics after his popular assessments on stalled government projects. His criticism of the government prompted him to register a new political party, but he has been at loggerheads with the regime over the course of last year.
