Tanzania is set to begin avocado exports to India, after India’s health authorities allowed the entry of the fruit from Tanzania following lengthy negotiations.
In 2003, India imposed an import embargo on avocados imported from Africa due to concerns that the fruits might be infested with dangerous pests. Traditionally, about 80 percent of the avocados grown in the East African country are consumed locally.
Tanzania’s current avocado export destinations include China, the USA, and South Africa, which only recently granted Tanzanian avocados access to its market.
Kenya is considered the top exporter of this fruit in Africa with close competitors as Mexico and Peru who export their produce in June each year. Kenya topped Africa’s avocado exports in 2020, and was among the world’s top 10 producers, with Murang’a leading with 31% of total production.
Kenya was ranked 8th globally in 2019 in export of avocados behind Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Spain, Chile, Colombia and the United States.
