South Africa's Rain launches Africa's first 5G network

Rain South Africa has activated Africa’s first 5G network launched the 5G network in South Africa. The launch is one of the world’s first commercial 5G networks that will help it’s customers enjoy faster internet speeds at lower costs

The company’s Chief Marketing Officer Khaya Dlanga said that the 5G network will be launched in some parts of Johannesburg and Tshwane and will be made available to select existing customers.

The coverage will be expanded to the major metros in South Africa over the course of the year 2020.

He further stated that select customers will purchase ultra-fast unlimited internet from R1000 per month (about USD68) and it will be delivered to the customer’s home. No installation will be required since the routers are simply plugged and play and the customers will be instantly connected.

The 5G network with Wifi 6 technology will enable users to stream high definition videos to multiple devices in an instant.

Rain, is a data-only mobile provider that launched in South Africa in 2018 offering 4G network with no contracts and has since seen fast growth in subscriptions.

The 5G network has been implemented in partnership with Huawei.
