Latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) raked in KSh 2.9 billion in revenue in the whole of 2023, with number of passengers moved during the period hitting 2,728,225.
- December last year was the best month for the SGR train in terms of number of passengers carried within the Nairobi-Mombasa route (304,605), translating into KSh 305.3 million in revenue.
- February was the lowest month for SGR, with only 163,016 passengers using the train translating to a revenue of KSh 185.4 million.
- Cargo volume transported via SGR rose from 514,843 tonnes in November last year to 520,313 tonnes in December 2023, generating KSh 1.3 billion in revenue during the same period.
SGR, which is operated by the Kenya Railways, adjusted fare prices beginning January this year on account of high cost of operations resulting from the fuel component. The prices of its first class went up by KSh 1500 to KSh 4500 from the previous KSh3 ,000 on the Nairobi-Mombasa route.
On the other hand, passengers using Economy Class on the Nairobi-Mombasa route now pay KSh 500 more as the cost rises to KSh 1,500 from the previous KSh 1,000.
Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) passenger usage declined from 316,075 in November 2023 to 250,792 in December 2023. However, revenue generated from MGR passenger traffic rose from KSh 18.6 million to KSh 27.5 million during the same period.
