Kenya’s hospitality industry, including restaurants and hotels, remains one of the hardest hit by COVID-19. Serena hotels is the latest to announce cost-cutting measures meant to ensure that the hotel chain makes it through the pandemic.
In March, Serena announced the closure of some of its establishments from March 27 in anticipation of reduced business levels until June 15.
Serena, in a memo to staff members, says that they are certain that their units will not open for business in the month of June 2020. Therefore, with respect to June 2020;
- •All staff will from 1st June 2020 take unpaid leave until further notice
- •However, for the month of June 2020, staff will be paid an allowance of KSh10,000 only; less NHIF and NSSF deductions
- •Essential staff who are required to be on duty on a regular basis will be paid 30% of their salary for the month of June
- •where staff are needed on a rotational basis to keep the properties; the staff shall be paid for the days worked
- •Individual managers/HODs will communicate to staff needed to be on duty during the month of June
- •The company will continue to provide for medical services within the existing network of providers
