Senior Safaricom staff charged with theft unlawfully sharing customer data

The Head of Regional Expansion – Mobile Money Segment at Safaricom was recently charged in court with unlawfully copying and sharing private subscriber information with unauthorized persons.

Brian Wamatu was arraigned in court alongside his colleague Billy Kinuthia who is the Senior Manager in charge of Network Systems Audit.

The two were also accused of wrongfully demanding KSh300 million from the Telco. They denied the charges and were released on KSh1 million cash bail each. The court instructed them to report to the Director of Criminal Investigations twice a week until the next hearing on 16th July 2019.

Brian served as the Acting Director, Safaricom Financial Services, a role previously held by Betty Mwangi who left Safaricom for Britam.
