The Ugandan ride-hailing app, SafeBoda, has announced that it will cease to operate in Kenya from November 27. The move follows blows from COVID-19 in the transport industry, which significantly affected the Boda Boda space, affecting the company’s operations.
“While Nairobi is seeing some economic recovery from Covid-19, Boda transportation has been hit hard. This has meant our business cannot sustainably operate in this environment and unfortunately, the timeline for a full recovery is not certain,” reads a notice from the startup.
The move will force over 4,000 riders to seek customers through other platforms or to independently negotiate with customers on payment terms.
Following the exit from Kenya, Safeboda will focus on expanding its Ugandan and Nigerian businesses.
Between now and November 27, the SafeBoda will support its drivers by encouraging customers to empty funds in their safeboda wallets by either taking rides or sending packages.
