Mobile Subscriptions
Safaricom’s market share of mobile subscriptions stood at 67 per cent, a decline of 2.1 per cent compared to the previous quarter. Airtel gained 2.5 per cent to record a market share of 19.7 per cent. Telkom Kenya recorded a market share of 8.6 per cent, a decline from 9 per cent in the previous quarter.
The report states:
“The country’s mobile market continues to undergo significant changes in the wake of rapid
development in the telecommunication industry. During the third quarter of the financial year
2017/18, the number of mobile subscriptions grew by 3.0 per cent to stand at 44.1 million from
42.8 million subscriptions reported during the second quarter. As a result, the mobile penetration level rose to 95.1 per cent from 94.3 per cent.”
Mobile Data Subscriptions
Safaricom continued to lead in mobile data subscriptions with a market share of 68.4 per cent , a decline from 72.8 per cent in the previous quarter. Airtel recorded a market share of 23.1 per cent while Telkom Kenya recorded 7.6 per cent.
“During the period under review, Wananchi Companies (Kenya) Limited continued to lead the fixed data/internet market with a market share of 34.4 per cent. Safaricom PLC reported a market share of 19.4 per cent whereas Mawingu Networks Limited came in third with a market share of 18.2 per cent,” the report reads.
Cyber Threats
The National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team – Coordination Centre (National KE-CIRT/CC), a multi-agency framework with the responsibility of coordinating cybersecurity in the country, detected 7.9 million cyber threats during the period under review, a drop from 10.7 million in the previous quarter. The decline was attributed to the cyber threat advisories National KE-CIRT/CC gave to the target organisations.
The different cyber threats included malware attacks, web app attacks, botnet/DDOS, system misconfiguration, online abuse, and online misrepresentation. The greatest threat was malware attacks at 5.6 million.
Mobile Money
During the same period, there were 663.7 billion mobile money transfer transactions carried out valued at Sh1.8 trillion. On the other hand, the number of commerce transactions were 474.5 billion valued at Sh1.29 trillion.
In the period under review, active money transfer subscriptions fell three per cent from 29.1 million from 30.0 million.
