Safaricom has petitioned the government to classify fibre as a critical infrastructure to help providers manage costs linked to destructions.
According to the Telco’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa, the classification will tame destruction of the infrastructure where the culprits get away without suffering the consequences. He singled out construction companies damaging the fiber infrastructure adding additional cost to the telecommunication companies.
“We want the culprits to be held accountable, through the classification, we will be able to reduce our cost resulting from the destruction and focus more on seamless rollout of our services across the country,” Ndegwa said.
Speaking in Eldoret at a ceremony to take stock of Kenya’s devolved governments, Ndegwa rooted for a similar classification of the Kenya Power infrastructure.
Ndewa’s call comes at a time when the Government has proposed hefty fines and jail terms for up to 10 years for people caught sabotaging infrastructure that is critical to national security.
Some of the critical infrastructure identified in the electricity sector include power lines, substations, off-grid generation stations, repeater stations and data centers.
