Safaricom has signed a partnership agreement with Nairobi County to digitize the operations and services of the county.
Safaricom will assist in digitising citizen services and revenue collection, aiming to generate KES 18 billion annually under the partnership.
Additionally, the telco will create and facilitate the use of the “My Nairobi App,” which will enable citizen interaction with the county via the “Bonga na Sakaja” platform. The app will be launched by the end of May as part of the larger “My Nairobi” centre.
The hub will also be accessible through other digital platforms, including the M-PESA Super App, a website, and a USSD shortcode for feature phone users.
This My Nairobi Hub will enable us to offer better services to the people of Nairobi. It offers a one-stop shop for Nairobi County residents and visitors to access services with multiple functionalities, including making payments.
Governor of Nairobi County – Sakaja Johnson
Safaricom will assist the county in creating digital platforms, incorporating backend services, and establishing a payment system to guarantee optimal service delivery, in addition to the “My Nairobi” centre.
Safaricom will also supply calling and data solutions and a “closed user group” that will offer reduced rates for employee communication. The partnership will also provide healthcare solutions for low-income residents and improve coordination with other partners, such as the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority.
Digitisation and technology have great potential to transform county Services providing citizens with increased convenience and local governments with more efficient operations and increased revenue collection.
Peter Ndegwa – Safaricom CEO
Additional available options include intelligent water systems as part of the smart city program, WiFi hotspots in impoverished neighbourhoods and near bus stations, a Comprehensive Traffic and Parking Management Solution, and a Disaster Recovery Center for the region.
Over the next two years, Safaricom will extend the “My Nairobi Hub” and other digital services as an added benefit to the county at zero expense as part of this collaboration.
