Safaricom grew its fixed internet market share to 46.1 per cent in the three months to December 2022, representing nearly half of all new connections in the country.
Data from the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) shows that the number of data subscriptions in the telecom increased by 22,148 to 372, 872 during the period making it the leading data provider.
“During the quarter under review, Safaricom PLC recorded the highest market shares in fixed data subscriptions at 46.1 percent followed by Wananchi Group at 31.1 percent,” CA says in the Second Quarter Statistics for the financial year 2022/23 (1st October-31st Dec 2022)
The telecom attributed the growth to huge investments in fixed internet connectivity across the country.
Safaricom is followed by Wananchi Group (Kenya) Limited, or Faiba, with 251,340 subscribers (31.1 per cent of the market), and Poa Internet Kenya Ltd., with 120,168 subscribers (14.9 per cent)
Others are Liquid Telecommunications Kenya, 17,837 (2.2 per cent), Mawingu Networks Ltd., 14,951 (1.8 per cent), and Dimension Data Solutions East Africa Limited, 13,950 (1.7 per cent), among others.
