Safaricom has partnered with Kenyan media houses; Nation Media, Standard Group to enable readers to pay for e-papers with their airtime. Safaricom customers will access digital/e-newspapers directly on their phones for KSh20, with each purchase available for seven days.
In addition, Safaricom says that the KSh20 will cover data usage related to downloading and reading the issue purchased.
Working from home directive has seen a surge in demand for online journalism as Safaricom says the initiative will empower customers to conveniently access the newspapers even as they limit their movement.
Coronavirus pandemic led to the government enforcing lockdown and social distancing measures that have been detrimental to newspaper sales. Print sales have dropped significantly due to disruption of distribution channels and dwindling customer numbers.
Customers will access Nation Media’s Daily Nation, Saturday Nation, Sunday Nation, and The Business Daily. They will also have access to Standard Group’s The Standard, Saturday Standard, Sunday Standard, and The Nairobian.
