Leading telco, Safaricom PLC, has applied to renew two core licences that anchor its network and international connectivity, prompting the Communications Authority to open a 30-day window for public objections.
- •The application covers the Network Facilities Provider Tier 1 licence and the International Gateway Operator licence.
- •These licences allow Safaricom to run national fibre and mobile infrastructure and route international traffic through undersea cable systems.
- •The Communications Authority said the renewals could affect consumers, firms and public bodies.
The Tier 1 licence enables the company to build and operate its backbone network including fibre routes, towers and switching sites. This supports voice, data, enterprise segments and the systems that carry M-Pesa transactions.
The International Gateway licence allows the firm to manage incoming and outgoing cross-border traffic, roaming services and links to global carriers.
