Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (SACCOs) engaged in the deposit-taking business that emerged top during this year’s Ushirika Day celebrations were led by Kenya Police Deposit-Taking SACCO. This Sacco won trophy for Best Managed DT Sacco in Kenya during the recently held 101th International Co-operatives Day celebrations or Ushirika Day Annual Awards, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre(KICC) in Nairobi.
Kenya Police also scooped first position as DT Sacco that is Best in Capitalization, Best Employer-based Sacco and Best Sacco in Credit Management, all in the category of large DT Saccos or tier one.
This year’s event was officiated by President Dr William Samoei Ruto, an ardent supporter of the co-operative movement which has been assigned a full ministerial docket under the Kenya Kwanza administration and is a key plant in the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
The annual International Ushirika Day Awards is held in the month of July each year, to celebrate and award outstanding Co-operative Societies in Kenya that have excelled in their various lines of business.
These awards serve as a benchmark to good corporate governance within deposit-taking co-operative societies.
The adjudication process was conducted by Co-operative Alliance of Kenya(CAK) and Co-operative Consultancy Services Limited, a specialist subsidiary of Co-operative Bank, which provides financial advisory services to mostly the Co-operative movement.
These annual Ushirika trophies are given to societies that excel in 8 categories namely Best Managed in Kenya, Best Capitalization, Best Savings Management, Best Credit Management, Most Efficiency, Best in Risk Management, Best in Technology Optimization and Most Improved Sacco.
Saccos featuring on the awards list
DT Saccos featuring at this annual Oscars include Mentor Sacco which won Best Sacco in Risk Management, followed in this tier one category by Mwalimu National DT Sacco and Yetu DT Sacco in second and third positions respectively.
Sholloyes non-withdrawal deposit-taking Sacco made its debut at the awards by winning the trophy for Best in Deposit Management, followed by Co-op Bank DT Sacco and Kenpipe DT Sacco.
Equity Bank Sacco emerged at the Most Efficient DT Sacco in Kenya followed by Ukaguzi DT Sacco and Co-op Bank DT Sacco in 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
Safaricom DT Sacco took first position in Best Sacco in Technology Optimization followed by UN DT Sacco and Stima DT Sacco settling for third position- tier one category.
