Rwandan authorities have secured a spot in the Naivasha Inland Depot for easy export and import via Mombasa port. The Naivasha port will reduce the freight duration as cargo will move through rail from Mombasa to Naivasha, a 560-kilometer journey. Trucks will be used to ferry goods from Naivasha to Rwanda.
Rail transport is cheaper and faster than road transport. Therefore, Rwanda will use the standard gauge railway to reduce logistics costs for Rwandan inbound or outbound cargo. Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vincent Biruta said the intention is to cut back logistical expenses.
There are talks on how the landlocked country can utilize the Lake Victoria passage to transport goods to Kampala. This will further reduce transport cost and make it easy for Rwanda to import and export goods.
Authorities are keen to address challenges caused by delayed cargo and congestion at ports of entry and exit.
