Kenyan students and other young professionals can participate in a workshop conducted over the internet on July 9, 2018. The hour-long webinar titled “Atoms Empowering Africa” is organized by Russia’s state-owned nuclear firm Rosatom, with support from the African Young Generation in Nuclear(AYGN) based in Nairobi, South African Network for Education in Nuclear Science and Technology (SAN-NEST) and South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).
Participants will discuss the potential of nuclear power to bolster Africa’s economic and social development. The webinar is organized in the framework of the fourth annual student video competition, which is running until the 25th of August 2018. The video competition encourages groups of three students between the ages of 18 and 30 to research various nuclear applications and their benefits for Africa and share them in 6 to 120-second videos.
Commenting on the webinar and video competition, Mr. Dmitry Shornikov, CEO of Rosatom Central and Southern Africa highlighted the company’s commitment to education, both in Africa and globally.

We at Rosatom see it as one of our key missions to assist the brightest young minds from across the globe to work together in solving global challenges that will shape the future of energy and the world as we know it”, said Shornikov.
The top 10 videos will be posted on the Rosatom Facebook page and the creators of the three with the most likes will win an all-expenses paid trip to Russia on 6th to 12th October 2018.
Rosatom conducts educational projects in countries of its presence, and regularly brings together the most promising students and young professionals from around the globe for educational sessions, trainings and forums in Russia and abroad.
For young people wishing to get a head start on a promising career in the nuclear field, Rosatom regularly holds physics competition for high school pupils and students of technical universities, where the winners get a chance to complete their education in Russia and join the nuclear elite when they come back home. Today, over 50 students from sub-Saharan Africa, including from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Africa and Zambia, study in Russia.
