The redesigning will enable the airport to handle about 7 million passengers annually. The second phase of expansion is likely to take place in 2032, thus allowing the airport to handle 14 million passengers annually.

RwandAir will benefit from the new facility as it seeks to expand operations in the future. Currrently, RwandAir serves 28 destinations with new routes such as America, Ethiopia, Angola, and Mozambique planned.
