President Uhuru Kenyatta Appointed EAC Chair

The EAC (East African Community) has appointed President Uhuru Kenyatta as chair while Burundi’s Evariste Ndayishimiye chosen as the community’s rapporteur.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, in turn, appointed Kenya’s Peter Mutuku Mathuki as the next East African Community Secretary-General, by protocol of the EAC that the eligible head of State nominates a candidate who is then approved by the Summit of Heads of State.

Dr Mathuki is an Executive Director of the East African Business Council, a body that includes private sector associations in the EAC member states. He previously served as a member of the East African Legislative Assembly, chairing the Committee on Legal Affairs and Good Governance and Accounts, Trade and Investment.

He has also held political positions in Kenya and in international bodies, including the International Labour Standards at the former International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU-Africa), now ITUC-Africa, which he served as director.

Dr Mathuki replaces Burundi’s Liberat Mfumukeko, whose five-year term ended.
