    President Ruto Nominates CBK Insider Gerald Nyaoma as Second Deputy Governor

    President William Ruto has nominated Gerald Nyaoma Arita to the vacant Deputy Governor position of Central Bank of Kenya.

    • •The nominee is a career central banker with 36 years of professional experience and is the outgoing director the apex bank’s supervision department.
    • •He has previously held positions such as director financial markets development, director banking services, director bank supervision department, internal audit, national payment system and assistant Mombasa branch manager.
    • •Nyaoma holds a master of philosophy (economics) degree from the university of Cambridge, UK where he attended as commonwealth scholar, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Nairobi.

    If approved by Parliament, Nyaoma will take up the vacant second Deputy Governor position, joining Dr. Susan Koech in assisting Governor Kamau Thugge run the apex bank.

    The second vacant DG position had attracted several high profile applicants including Dr. Habil Olaka, Prof. Dulacha Galgallo, Charles Mutuma Ringera, and Dr. Florence Koki.

    Nyaoma’s nomination points to a desire to retain institutional knowledge at the head of the apex bank. Governor Thugge was tapped from the Ministry of Finance, where he had served in various roles after moving from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

    Dr. Koech, who has served since March 10, 2023, after serving as Principal Secretary in the State Department of Wildlife, the East African Community, and at the State Department for Regional Development.

    Other Appointments

    In steering the transitions arising from vacancies within constitutional commission and other state agencies, the president also nominated Sammy Chepkwony Chairman of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

    Other members nominated to SRC include Gilda Odera, Geoffrey Apolo Omondi, Leonid Ashindu, Mohamed Aden Abdi and Martin Kizito Ongoyi.

    In addition to the nominations, the President has also forwarded names of candidates for key roles within the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), and the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC).

    The nominated applicants now await Parliament’s approval, following the formal transmission of his name to the House for review and confirmation.
