Portland and Uchumi Lead NSE Midday Trade, LAPTRUST I-REIT Dominates Turnover

NSE MIDDAY UPDATE — TUESDAY 2 DECEMBER, 1:30PM

East African Portland Cement extended its sharp rally. PORT rose 9.79% to KSh 92.50, the highest level since 16 May 2014. The counter is now 1,973% above its all-time low of KSh 4.46 in July 2024 and 202% higher in 2025.

The current surge follows Kalahari Cement’s plan to buy NSSF’s 27% stake at KSh 66.00. With earlier Holcim and Bamburi purchases, Kalahari’s effective control stands at 68.7%.

Uchumi continued its record-breaking run. UCHM gained 9.91% to KSh 1.22, taking YTD gains to 617%. Newly released 2025 disclosures show Uchumi posted its first operating profit since 2014 at KSh 8.8M. Sales rose 88% to KSh 123M and creditor settlements reached 95% under the CVA.

Rental income and lower overheads supported the turnaround. Retail operations remain minimal and net income was not reported, but the stock remains the strongest at the NSE this year.

Sameer Africa printed an abnormal volume spike at Monday’s close. The counter moved 4.5M shares, its highest since January 2025’s 5.4M. It is only the eighth time since 2000 that Sameer has traded more than 4M shares in a single session.

Turnover stood at KSh 813M on 37.9M shares. LAPTRUST Imara I-REIT led activity with a 600M block of 30M units at 20.00, the largest since the identical 30M trade on 19 May 2025. Equity Group followed with 77M, EABL 31M, Safaricom 24M and KCB 18M.

Foreign investors recorded KSh 53.5M in buys led by EABL at 31.5M and Safaricom at 21.9M. Sales totaled 26.7M, with Safaricom at 21.8M, KCB at 3M and BAT Kenya at 1.5M.

The NASI slid 0.84% to 1.53 points.
