KenGen has confirmed that the Olkaria V project is on course and that it will be completed in June 2019. The Kenyan and Japanese governments have already pumped Sh17 billion into the project. Olkaria V power plant will add 160MW to the national grid in the next 15 months.
During an inspection tour of the project site in Naivasha, Rebecca Miano, KenGen’s managing director said Olkaria V and several other green projects which are at different phases of development will guarantee Kenyans clean, reliable, and affordable electricity.
“The power plant is part of KenGen’s green energy development agenda aimed at delivering 721MW of renewable energy by 2020 at an investment of Sh135 billion,” Miano stated.
“Our focus is on geothermal energy, which is an eco-friendly, renewable, and reliable resource that can reduce consumers’ utility costs by up to 50 percent.”
Additionally, Miano said the project’s equipment in Germany and Japan has already been tested and is ready for shipment.
