I first met Nuru Mugambi in 2017 when she headed the Public Policy and communications at the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA). From that initial encounter, we quickly established a professional relationship centered on banking sector initiatives.
At the time of our meeting, Kenya’s banking industry was undergoing significant policy changes. Given that The Kenyan Wall Street was still in its early stages, Nuru recognized the value of our work in informing decision-makers and the public about financial services. She invited me to her office to discuss a potential collaboration. That meeting led to one of the largest contracts we had signed at the time—a milestone for my young company.
One moment from that meeting stands out vividly. Midway through, Nuru asked me, “Eric, do you remember the deliverables for this project?” I hesitated, unsure if I could recall everything. She opened her drawer, handed me a notebook and pen, and said, “Write it down.” That simple act left a lasting impression on me, instilling the discipline of taking notes and planning meticulously. From that day on, I’ve never attended a meeting without a notebook.
Over the years, we worked closely on numerous projects including initiatives to empower women in the banking industry. Nuru was not only a visionary but also one of the most influential women who have contributed in a massive way in shaping Kenya’s financial landscape.
In 2020, while pursuing her graduate studies, she reached out to me with an idea: a platform to celebrate and support women in the financial sector. This vision became the Angaza Awards, which has since grown into a pan-African initiative. Even during her illness, Nuru remained deeply involved, actively following up and contributing to the program.
Beyond our professional relationship, Nuru became like family to me. She served on the board of one of my companies and built a close bond with my family. She often reminded me how blessed I was, offering words of encouragement and wisdom.
Nuru was a dedicated, professional, and compassionate individual with a heart for uplifting others. Her legacy will continue to inspire countless lives, and I am committed to ensuring that Angaza thrives in her honor.
Rest in peace, Nuru. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
