    NSE Record Drops in Equity, Bond Turnover in January

    NSE Record Drops in Equity, Bond Turnover in January

    Nairobi Securities Exchange(NSE) recorded a drop in equity turnover by 21.2% in January 2022 from KSh 10.5 Billion to KSh8.2 Billion; while bonds turnover decreased by 9% from KSh53.2 Billion to KSh 48.4 Billion.

    NSE market capitalization also fell by 1.9% from KSh 2,592.92 Billion in December 2021 to KSh2,543 Billion in January 2022.

    NSE TOP GAINERS AND LOSERS IN JANUARY

    Car & General led the top gainers pack with a gain of 74.5% Month on Month. Car & Gen closed its last trading day on Friday, February 4, 2022 at KSh57.00 per share on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), recording an 8.4% drop from its previous closing price of KSh 62.25.

    Car & General began the year with a share price of KSh 33.95 and has since gained 67.9% on that price valuation, ranking it first on the NSE in terms of year-to-date performance. The counter has accrued an outstanding 54% over the past four-week period alone—best on NSE.

    The listed vehicle dealer was followed by Crown paints whose share price was up 18.9%; Standard Group(12.9%); Sasini(12.3%); TransCentury(11.1%); East African Portland(9.6%); Kakuzi(8.6%); BAT(6.0%); Kapchorua(5.8%) and Williamson Tea( 3.8%)

    The biggest losers in January were led by Nairobi Business Ventures which had the highest loss of 18.3% followed by Sanlam( 15.7%); HF Group(12.1%); Umeme( 11.9%); Kenya Power(10.9%); Home Afrika( 10.0%); TPS Eastern Africa( 8.2%); Olympia(7.5%), Sameer(6.6%) and Total whose share price declined by 6% in January.

    In terms of sector returns as at Jan 2022,Automobiles and Accessories recorded highest gain of 74.5% followed by Construction and Allied(6.2%) and Agriculture(4.6%).

    The sectors that had losses were led by Insurance(5.6%) followed by Energy& Petroleum( 5.4%); Telecommunications( 2.8%); Commercial and Services( 1.5%); Investment( 1.1%) and ETF(0.8%) and Banking(0.8%).
