The government has extended, again, the deadline for applying for the new generation e-passport to March 2021. This follows the reality that 1.8 million Kenyans, including those in the diaspora, are yet to replace their old passport with the new East African Community biometric e-Passport.
Initially, the government had set the deadline at 1st March 2020, with long queues being experienced as the deadline approached. Therefore, the government said they will begin processing passports within one day from July 2020.
The new generation passport, launched on August 31, 2018, has enhanced security features embedded in an electronic chip to minimize fraud, identity theft, forgery and passport skimming
Therefore, holders of the old passport may continue using it until 1st March 2021.
To facilitate the passport renewal, the government has set up passport access centers in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisii, Eldoret and Embu. Those in the diaspora can access the centers in Berlin, Paris, London, Washington DC, Johannesburg and Dubai.
