The Ministry of Interior and Coordination is planning to kick start a nationwide crackdown on 23rd July against foreigners working in the country illegally.
In May C.S Matiang’i had asked foreigners to surrender work permits to the Immigration Department for authentication and thereon issued with electronic cards. 3 brokers have already been arrested in connection to extortion of foreigners seeking work permits.
“We will continue to hunt down for more brokers because the Department of Immigration Services does not need such people to facilitate the processing of papers,” he said while speaking to the media at Nyayo House in Nairobi.
He added that his ministry would draft a law that would have deportees meet their own travel costs so as to ease government expenditure on deportations. Currently the government has used up to about Ksh 500 Million in deportation costs.
34,000 work permits have been issued to foreigners according to government records, however some foreigners have acquired permits fraudulently.
