According to The East African, some of Nakumatt’s Ugandan suppliers and landlords have gone to court claiming over US$ 0.5 Million from the troubled retailer.
Three plaintiffs; Mpororo Group Ltd, Bright Rwamirama and Florence Rwamirama have filed suit at the High Court’s Commercial Division accusing the retailer of fraud while seeking to be paid $569,339 and legal costs. The amount is accumulated rent for Nakumatt’s store in Mbarara, western Uganda.
The East African reports that the suit puts at risk all property held by Nakumatt (U) Ltd ahead of any other court orders. The plaintiffs say that Nakumatt started to default from 2013 forcing them to dispatch protest letters that were acknowledged by Nakumatt which the retailer failed to honour.
Nakumatt has also been accused of irregular VAT claims and issuing of bouncing cheques which are criminal offences.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that consumer goods company, Uniliver has cut supplies of all its products to Nakumatt. The products include Blue Band margarine, Omo washing powder, Vaseline petroleum jelly, soaps such as Lifebuoy, Geisha, Rexona and Sunlight, citing non-payment of dues.
However, The Business Daily on Monday reported that the multinational company had began talks witt the supermarket to restore the supplies.
