Plans to construct the Naivasha – Kisumu Standard Gauge Railway have been shelved after the Kenyan government failed to secure funding from China. The Cabinet Secretary for Transport James Macharia said that they will revive the old Meter Gauge Railway which will link the Naivasha port to the Western parts of Kenya and proceed to Uganda.
President Kenyatta and his delegation visited China with the aim of securing funds for several development projects. The team could not agree on suitable financing terms with the Chinese officials for the railway project which was expected to cost KSh386 billion.
Kenya will instead fund the refurbishment of the old railway line at a cost of KSh40 billion.
